Kitchen Remodel

The existing kitchen was crowded, with inadequate storage, poor flow and use of space.  The connection to the dining room was improved and the kitchen extension was widened by incorporating an unnecessary hallway. Cabinetry was added throughout to maximize storage.   Before:

Ranch House Kitchen Remodel

The existing kitchen seemed too small for a house of this size.  How could a family of four manage in this small,  crowded and dark kitchen?  Without adding on, or taking over the family room, the design strategy of this kitchen remodel was to maximize counter and storage space while creating the illusion of spaciousness. Here again, connecting the kitchen to the Dining Room visually and functionally was key to the design.   Before:   General Contractor and Custom cabinetry by Shigoto … Read More

El Cerrito Bungalow Remodel

This traditional bungalow with its small rooms did not suit its new owners looking for a contemporary aesthetic and modern open living spaces. Structural changes made it possible to create a sense of cohesion and openness.  Dual glazed aluminum windows installed throughout the house added natural light and ventilation and greater energy efficiency.  New energy efficient appliances transformed this bungalow into a modern home. SECOND STORY ADDITION & HOUSE REMODEL

A family of four with growing boys needed additional rooms and did not want to leave the neighborhood. A second story was added to their corner lot house, linking up split levels. The ground floor living spaces were reconfigured for better flow opening up to a new kitchen at the rear. The new upstairs wing added two bedrooms and a bathroom. The new skylit stair was tucked in without an inch to spare. Before: Canivet Construction

Salvaged and shop made windows play w/ scale and window … Read More

Oakland Hills Remodel

This special house nestled in a grove of mature oak trees seems removed from the city. Except for the front door and a kitchen side access, the house had no connection to the gorgeous site it inhabits. Over a decade, the owner and I joyfully transformed it. The first phase saw a replacement of all single paned aluminum windows with large dual glazed wood windows and French doors throughout, as well as the building of a rear deck to anchor … Read More

A second bathroom was added. Before:

New Great Room with Kitchen

A kitchen remodel here becomes part of a new Great Room. In order to bring the entire family together, a Great Room is created to connect the kitchen and Family Room. Taking cues from the existing boxed beam ceiling, the structural dividing wall of this two story residence was removed and replaced by a new beam, concealed in the extended boxed beam ceiling feature above. The kitchen was entirely reconfigured and appointed with new appliances, cabinetry and lighting.  New Marvin … Read More

San Leandro Remodel

This project was designed for a couple of graphic designers with modern sensibilities. The rear portion of their Tudor style residence had an uninsulated, unused screened in porch addition. Walls were removed and the floor was rebuilt at the same level as the rest of the residence to create an open kitchen with space for entertaining, contiguous with the garden. The custom kitchen cabinetry was designed and fabricated by Randy Castellon of Maker Studio.
